When playing science fiction games, these kind of figures can be anything.
They can be aliens in space suits or humans in power armor.
Having different colors allows you to form different units based on color coding.
Different colors also allows you to create different factions and they can fight each other.
If I have a bunch of them in one color and few in the other colors, I sometimes designate the other colors as specialists; engineers, or scientists for example.
