Airfix vs Italeri Smack Down

To satisfy the requests of several folks, I have done some comparison shots of the new Italeri WWII US Army set with some sets of old. As you can see the scale creep monster has infiltrated this set and they are a bit on the big side. Seen here with an Airfix USMC second edition soldier. I remember we thought he was big at the time.

Airfix USMC first and second edition soldiers. Not the feet, the first edition guy has no feet, he must be slogging through the mud.

Both of these are good figures, too bad we have moved to the Land of the Giants.

A nice collection of Italeri figures in dark OD and the first edition Airfix in light OD. The Italeri are much better figures, the detail is way better and the sculpting of the poses is better. The selection of poses is better in the old Airfix set. Notice the Italeri even have thinner stands. I plan on buying the Italeri but I won't mix them with my Airfix armies. Too bad.

Mike - don't know if you recall the discussion on Pegasus helmets we had about a year ago over at HaT, but the same applies to these, look at the first photo; Airfix - fine rendition of an M1, Italeri - 4 pint pyrex cake-mixing bowl with netting!!! The sculpting/moulding detail is better than series 1 Afx. but you'll never beat the 2nd issue.

MG is useful, but the bazooka-man you posted the other day is fighting with the Marx German and Esci modern for gold in 'Worst carriage of an anti-armour weapon, Ever' award, he's about to fill the wrong end with dirt!. The radio man - in addition to others comments, would simply fall backwards, if trying to keep his spine as straight as he is, those things are heavy - I've carried them!!!

But...you shouldn't write-off mixing them, there are a few good poses, and the Esci set gives some more, add the Afx. and Revell sets paint them all the same (in your case spray them!!) and you'd have a nice set that would be all shapes and sizes, just like the real thing...

My plan is to wait until the AT set and Winter US Army set before I determine how many of these to get and if I will mix them or not. If I do mix them, I will probably mix them with the Esci / Italeri set which has kneeling and standing riflemen and is a bit larger than Airfix.
