Before the troops arrived, the citizens were attacked by the bugs.
They fought back as best as they could.
Crowbar....
Baseball bats...
Rolling pins...
Even bare fists....
But mostly, all they could do was run.

that's some small town of citizens that don't even have a shotgun between them to deal with the bugs.
Still, a Louisville Slugger packs a good wallop.
Carry on.
The attack was a surprise and the people were at the park and not carrying at the time.
