Subbuteo

Years ago I heard of a miniatures company called Subbutto. I thought they were like BUM used to be; some Spanish company making bad copies of other peoples models. Recently, I found out they actually made games of rugby, cricket, fishing and mostly soccer, or European Football.

They are no longer in business but I went on eBay and found some of the cricket players.

They fit nicely with these WWII Germans from Italeri in 1/72nd scale plastic.

Figures are hard plastic and have reasonable detail. They come pre-painted.

Of course, I don't do WWII British, but they have played the game for several hundred years. I plan to use them with both my British Colonial figures and my Free Indian Legion figures fighting for Nazi Germany.

That would be 'Subbuteo'. It's from the full Latin name of the bird known in English as a hobby.

When I first saw the picture I thought 'Subbuteo' I didn't realise they did cricket players too. Great way to use figures.

I can't believe Subbuteo never made it to the US.
Back in the 70s practically every boy in Britain had a Subbuteo set.

I customised my teams with Humbrol paint and actually made the models look like the real footballers they represented.

Yes, Subbuteo. Thanks all for the correction. Actually, Subbuteo apparently did make it to the US but I never saw it. There is a website from some group in Texas that still plays.
