Deep Sea Diving Bell

Sometimes a project just gets stuck in my head and stays there until I decide to build it. This project I have been thinking about since about 1964, so I figured it was time to get working on it. The movie The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, has a scene in it with a diving bell. Since that time I have wanted a diving bell. So I am building four of them, in 1/72nd scale. A quick trip to Michael's got all the stuff I needed.

Four wooden balls, in two sizes. They will be the body of the bell. One side is flat so it sits flat on the table. The flat side will be where I put the door.

Little wooden spools to take up the cable to raise and lower the bell.

Eyelets, I will hammer these into the wooden sphere to make the port holes. Some seem to have very few port holes and other seem to have a lot. A couple bucks got more than I can ever use.

The elastic metal stuff is used for little kids bracelets. It will be my cable for the diving bell. I have a couple tug boats in my fleet, a couple barges, and the merchant Flower Class Corvette, and I suspect several of them may soon be in the diving bell business. Cost per bell will be about $4 each, not too bad.

I SWEAR we love the same movies...
The beast from 20,000 Fathoms is a classic (and an early role for a young Lee Van Cleef - helluva marksman)

Good luck w/ the BATHYSPHERE.
(WIKI's got a nice pic)

Carry on.

Maybe we should have a film festival.
