He Walks

He's walking.

Move before he steps on us!

The giant robot takes a few steps forward.

This is a great achievement.

The Robot Walks

He is up.

He is standing, the men are in awe!

Order him to walk.

He steps forward.

And again, he works.
 

Robot Stands

He seems to be in good working order.

Now to close him up and get him on his feet.

He is standing!

He is so huge, so terrifying!

Robots and Robots

The giant is still now.

The men patrol because until he is operational, he is vulnerable.

There are always last minute adjustments.

Even a small robot works on the large robot!

The officers are anxious to see the results of six years of planning and work.  Camrade Stalin himself "suggested" this project to the head of the DDR.  Who could refuse his ideas.  Even with him gone the DDR decided it would be a worthwhile attempt to restore former German territory, albeit outside Europe.

Ready for Action

The Germans are here at the request of local people, but not with the permission of their national government.

That's why the DDR soldiers are on patrol around the perimeter of this secret base.

Keeping an active vigil in the hot equatorial African sun.

Strange equipment checks the operating system of the robot.

Final checks are made before deployment.
 

Robots and Germans

It's 1958, why are Officers of the DDR here in Africa now?

Because if the Soviet Union sends in troops there are international repercussions.

But no one is alarmed by Germans in Africa.

They and their massive robot are just there to help the people.

But the men refueling the robot have to wear protective gear from the corrosive fuel it uses.
 

DDR in Africa

A large object in the middle of the African plains.

Large fuel tanks to one side.

Officers of the Deutsche Demokratische Republik, or DDR.

Why are they in Africa?

At one time large parts of Africa were German colonies.
 

Japanese Planes

Daylight comes fast too.

Not much fuel so we can't afford to patrol.

But if we are surprised with our planes on the ground we are doomed.

Can't we send the transport plane to get more supplies?

At least fix the generator so the radio will work.

We have to start an airplane and use it's engine to speak to command.

They say to hold the transport plane for an important mission.

We don't know what it is to be.

Hopefully it will be good news.
