In World War Two the US Army and OSS the Free French and the British Special Operations Executive, and other allies parachuted uniformed soldiers and agents into German Occupied Territory to conduct sabotage and other acts in coordination with local resistance groups. The this was Operation Jedburgh and they typically dropped three personnel. One American, one Britain, and one from the country were the operation was to take place, usually France, but also Belgium, or Holland.
They were dropped after D-Day and very close to Allied lines. The intent was to cause disruptions to the Germans just behind the Allied advance. Knock out a phone exchange, or blow up a bridge, or some other work that would have an immediate effect on the tactical situation.
Just as the OSS eventually became the CIA, so too did the SOE eventually become Mi6.
James Bond was likely one of these agents. Here we see French agent with a German rifle at the corner.
The Germans are making a raid on a neighborhood where they suspect a Jedbourgh team is working. James Bond may even be in that small alleyway in the red building.
