Behind the Scenes with Mammoths

These are the mammoth models that I used for the previous group of photos.

I got some at the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles.  https://tarpits.org/   They have an excellent museum and gift shop.

Some of the others are toys from various places over the last 30 years.  This one has a paint chip on his tusk.  I have since repaired it.

This is my whole mammoth herd.  I had to bring them inside and put them on a couple towels to let the snow melt.  I like to take photos in the snow.  It only snows a couple days a year here in Kentucky and so I have to be quick and take the photos right away or it will all melt.

 These are the figures I used.  I converted some Caesar Miniatures figures and made them into cavemen.  Most ancient figures that don't have armor or shields work okay.  Leave off most the swords and pikes but use all the spears.  There is also an Airfix Tarzan set native here without his shield.  Some of these have had spears or other items added to them.

End of the Mammoths

The humans got a mammoth.

The mammoths continue their trek.

The humans prepare the meat.

None of it will be wasted, bones, tusks, everything will be used.

 The journey is long and cold, not every mammoth will make it and they won't all fall to human attack.

Only Lost One

Sound the horn.

The axe men move in to cut up the kill.

The rest of the herd bunches up and moves away.

Leaving the humans behind.

 The mammoths were lucky to lose only one member of the herd.

Mammoth in the Snow and Spears

The humans separate a slow mammoth from the herd.

They jab him with spears in the deep snow.

He goes down.

They move in, while watching the other mammoths move away.

The animal dies in the snow.

The humans are triumphant.

Sound the horn of victory.
 

Slowing Down

The snow is so soft and deep!

The recent storm left so much fresh snow the mammoths must almost swim through it.

The men with spears are closing in!

Nearer and closer the danger comes.

They have selected a target.

Of the the medium sized mammoths near the end of the herd has been slowing down.
 

Deep Snow and Men

The men attacked the column of mammoths from the right side rear. 

Yelling and blowing horns.

The mighty beasts lunged forward into the heavy and deep snow.

Then more men appeared on the left side of the group.

These men had fire too!

All the big bull could do is run faster and hope the others could make it through the path he created.
 

Men vs Mammoths

Keep going, don't slow down.

Men!

Men with fire and spears!

Don't scatter, they will pick us off one by one.

Keep the little ones in the middle, they are the most vulnerable.

Maybe we can escape if we keep together and hurry.

Don't Lag Behind

He moved faster.

He could smell the green grass growing ahead.

Just a little bit farther.

Keep them moving.

Don't let the old ones lag behind.

There could be dangers!
 

Mammoth In the Snow

The old bull could not remember the snow so deep and the winter so cold.

He and the other large mammoths were breaking a trail for the younger ones.

It was not just cold but the snow so deep it was hard to find food.

But they were moving to the valley were they always found food in the winter in past.

Just keep the herd together and keep them moving.
