Boer Infantry

Mens fashions don't change much and in 1/72nd scale it's even harder to see what's different.

My plan is to use these figures as American Militia for my War of the Worlds project for the entire time span of the project, 1898 to the present.

I live in rural Kentucky, USA and I see guys who look just like this at the supermarket, often with guns.

Of course, today they would have a greater mix of guns but for 1898 to about 1958 these guys and these long bolt action guns are just fine.

Baggy clothing, floppy hats, beards, and a bolt action rifle are common for men who work outside in areas were there are dangerous wild animals, or where hunting is common.

I may do a few head swaps, perhaps some baseball caps, or cowboy hats to Americanise these guys a little.

But considering they are from the Boer War they are pretty good.

Parrot and 5 Inch

Strelets ACW Union troops with a Parrot Rifle in an entrenched position.

Good for sieges.

Or prepared positions on the defense.

Here the Model 1890 5 inch howitzer in use by US troops.

The same crew as the ACW gun works for an early use of the gun, as the uniforms did not change much even for a long time.

Here the Parrot Rifle being used by a Boer crew.

I think they would work for Confederates, or even for an American Militia unit up to about 1900 when such guns would be out of service, but no later than 1920 when US inventories were cut after the war.

I find the Boer War figures very useful for a variety of troop types.
 

Gun Crew

Strelets 1/72nd scale plastic Boer War artillery crews and guns.

They make a great set up.

Lots of people being active.

Manning the guns is hard work.

A big crew spreads the load.

Here is an unexpected crew member.

I was building a Marlin Machine Gun on cannon type mount.

 First Volunteer Insect Machine Gun Corps, CPL Stink Bug.

Artillery Crewmen

More 1/72nd scale Strelets Boer War artillery figures.

I like that they give you so many poses.

It makes the crews look more individual when they don't just have four or five poses.

Leaning on the sponge.

And handling the ammo.
 

Boer Artillery Crew

I think the Boer crew will work well as American civilian militia for the 1890s up to about 1940.

They look very much like American rural people to me.

Even having a Black man in the crew is typical for American troops.

These figures have great poses I think.

They really look like they are working the gun.
 

Boer War Artillery

Boer Field Artillery from Strelets in 1/72nd scale.

Two guns and crews.

7.5 cm field guns by Krupp.

The Boers got them in the 1890s and used them against the British at the turn of the century.

I plan on using mine as a private purchase by American Militia.

Militia units often purchased their own equipment and this gun was widely exported and very advanced for it's time.

It was not used in US service even for trails as far as I can tell.

The model kit is pretty good for wargaming, simple and sturdy.
