One advantage of small ships is their ability to get in close to shore.
From there they can deliver close in naval gunfire support to troops on shore.
In this case a twin 40mm anti-aircraft gun fires horizontally at the enemy in the tree line.
The ship mounted guns have the advantage over tank chassis mounted guns.
The crews have more working space.
And the ammunition supply is almost unlimited.
